Cragging Journal 2015
Wednesday 22 April 2015 - Neilston
A lovely sunny and warm evening for 12 members cragging at Neilston Quarry to kick-off the season and inspire us for summer to come. It was quite busy with other folk, but we all managed to get a few routes lead with old favourites like Willie's route and Fornication, Strawberry crack and Kristeen's crack. More debris has fallen recently from above Grassy crack on the right side of the Quarry.
Good use was made of the new WhatsApp group to arrange spare gear for a newcomer.
Wednesday 29 April 2015 - Craigmore
Despite the terrible wet weather in Glasgow all day there were many dry routes tonight at Craigmore including Craigmore corner, Tom and Jerry wall, Sabre crack, Weasel and Stoat.
As well as climbing we practiced setting up top ropes for several routes and also protected abseils to retrieve gear etc.
Wednesday 6 May 2015 - Craigmore
Another evening cragging at Craigmore for those that could make it - this time with plenty of banter from Dave and Angie. We climbed on till it was almost too dark to see, with our new recruits Euan and Kirsty enjoying The Niche, Rampage, Tom and Jerry wall and (our favourite) Sabre crack.
Wednesday 13 May 2015 - Auchinstarry
There were many climbers taking advantage of the warm sunny evening (and still no midges!). Alison and Sarah lead routes Tar, Scream, Slinky Lizard and Spirogyra.
Wednesday 20 May 2015 - Auchinstarry
It was Auchinstarry Quarry again, especially for those that missed it last week - plenty of routes scaled during the evening including Mister, Ye Can Walk up Roon the Back, Scream, Anarchist, Spirogyra and Red Lead. Banter tastic with the climbers from the Lomond Club.
Wednesday 3 June 2015 - Dumbarton Rock
A lovely summer's evening was spent at Dumby (aka Dumbarton Rock) exploring the Boulders and Trad routes above the sea. Most memorable moment - climbing the trad route Plunge on the West Face and then having to abseil back down using a lamp fitting as an anchor point!
Wednesday 10 June 2015 - Loudoun hill
We spent a beautiful, warm evening (with no midges) in the Amphitheatre of Loudoun Hill. Routes climbed included Pulpit Arete, Mantelshelf Wall, Frustration Wall & Conclusion Wall. Amazing sunset over Arran to finish. We spent a beautiful, warm evening (with no midges) in the Amphitheatre of Loudoun Hill. Wednesday 17 June 2015 - Whangie
There were a handful of hardy souls who walked in to The Whangie on what was a very chilly and windy evening (is it actually June?!). After summiting Recess Route and negotiating the tricky traverse and descent we packed up and returned to our cars and went to the nearest Pub! No need for the head torches.
Tuesday 23 June 2015 - Craigmaddie
A sneaky bouldering session was squeezed in at Craigmaddie NS 586 763 on Tuesday (before the rain on Wednesday). Armed with a few bouldering mats we had a go at problems on the gritstone of Lower Roof, Jawbone Crag, Main Crag and the Upper Crag. Great views of Glasgow - including the tower blocks - a superb venue for an evening's climb.
Wednesday 1 July 2015 - Quadrocks
We got lucky with the weather and climbed all evening at the Quadrocks in a very humid, warm evening - although there were a few too many midges at times! Climbed routes on both the low and main crag including Fingers wall, Vee Groove and Big Corner. Spectacular sunset with a well earned fish supper and Nardini's ice cream.
Wednesday 8 July 2015 - Ben A'an
It was a a perfect evening to be cragging on Ben A'an as it was sunny, warm and there was a gentle breeze (with no midges!!)
The alternative route to maintain access to the summit proved to be very muddy and had steep rough sections with temporary surfacing. Fortunately, it came to an end just below the clearing under the crags. Soloed up Jug handle wall and Rowan Rib on the lower and middle tiers.
Thursday 30 July 2015 - Whangie
Cragging this week was at The Whangie making the best of Thursday's dry, sunny, evening. Great views all evening of Loch Lomond and the Arrochar Alps.
It was Sinead's first introduction to the Whangie and she happily scaled several routes during the evening include Easy Groove, Cave Chimney, and Bird's Nest on the Gendarme. There were also guest appearances made by Faether and The Painter - along with their cry of Eldorado!
Thursday 6 August 2015 - Loudoun Hill
Again, cragging was moved to Thursday evening to accommodate our 'summer' conditions. A sunny and warm evening was had at Loudoun Hill, although being shortened by various road diversions and the earlier fading light. We enjoyed leading routes Pulpit Arete and Conclusion Wall.
Wednesday 12 August 2015 - Auchinstarry
Auchinstarry was the location for another lovely warm, sunny evening's cragging. There were various groups climbing including Brian leading his first route at the Car Park Area under Charlie's expert tuition, and Angie, feeling comfortable on rock once again thanks to Steven's encouragement. Thanks to Alex for the photos.
