Old Men on North Butress
In an otherwise barren post-fatherhood winter, Willie and I managed to get up to Glen Coe for a spot of Winter climbing a couple of weeks ago. After a predictably longer than intended evening at the Kingy bar, we decided to go up North Buttress on the Buachaille as there was masses of snow on the higher hills.
A great time was had up this classic line with much better weather than expected. This being Scotland though, there was a hail storm as we were on the 1st pitch which meant a good dowsing in spindrift for myself on the crux (which Willie yet again managed to avoid, this time by stringing the first two pitches together).
A great time, but also definitely felt a harder time than it should have. Age and the lack of exercise were catching up with the both of us as we hauled our sorry carcasses up the final slopes. Fortunately, amazing views provided suitable excuse to sit and recover before a descent down an incredibly snow-laden ridge to avoid the corniced Coire na Tualaich.Niall K
